In his new book, New Hampshire Odyssey and Beyond, Hart reflects on his life and career, from his early days in state politics to his scandalous downfall and subsequent reinvention. Hart's story is a cautionary tale about the perils of ambition, the importance of personal integrity, and the resilience of the human spirit.
Hart begins his book by describing his childhood in Kansas and his early involvement in politics. He was a bright and ambitious young man, and he quickly rose through the ranks of the Democratic Party. In 1974, he was elected to the U.S. Senate, where he quickly became a leading voice on foreign policy and national security.
In 1984, Hart decided to run for president. He was a long shot, but he quickly gained momentum with his message of hope and change. Hart won the New Hampshire primary, and he was the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination.
But Hart's campaign was derailed by a sex scandal. In May 1987, the Miami Herald reported that Hart had been having an extramarital affair with Donna Rice, a young actress. Hart initially denied the allegations, but he was eventually forced to admit that they were true.
The scandal destroyed Hart's presidential campaign. He withdrew from the race, and his political career was over.
But Hart did not give up. He went on to write several books, and he became a sought-after speaker on the lecture circuit. He also worked as a consultant for various political and business organizations.
In New Hampshire Odyssey and Beyond, Hart reflects on his life and career with candor and insight. He admits that he made mistakes, but he also insists that he never lost his faith in the power of politics to make a difference in the world.
Hart's book is a valuable contribution to the literature on American politics. It is a cautionary tale about the perils of ambition, the importance of personal integrity, and the resilience of the human spirit.
