The early years of the race were dominated by American drivers. Ralph DePalma won the race three times in the 1910s, and Tommy Milton won it twice in the 1920s.

The Roaring Twenties

The 1920s were a golden age for the Indianapolis 500. The race became known for its high speeds and close finishes.

In 1925, Pete DePaolo won the race by a mere 2.1 seconds. In 1927, George Souders won the race by a margin of just 1.9 seconds.

1936-1941

The 1930s saw the rise of the European drivers in the Indianapolis 500. In 1934, Wilbur Shaw became the first European driver to win the race.

Shaw won the race again in 1937 and 1939. In 1938, Floyd Roberts became the first American driver to win the race in over a decade.

Post-War

After World War II, the Indianapolis 500 resumed in 1946. The race was won by George Robson, who averaged a speed of 114.8 mph.

The late 1940s and early 1950s saw the rise of Bill Vukovich. Vukovich won the race in 1953 and 1954. He was killed in a crash during the 1955 race.

1950s

The 1950s saw the rise of the American drivers in the Indianapolis 500. In 1952, Troy Ruttman became the youngest driver to ever win the race.

In 1955, Bob Sweikert won the race by a margin of just 0.07 seconds. In 1957, Sam Hanks won the race by a margin of just 0.03 seconds.

1960s

The 1960s saw the rise of the British drivers in the Indianapolis 500. In 1963, Jim Clark became the first British driver to win the race.

In 1965, Graham Hill became the second British driver to win the race. In 1969, Mario Andretti became the first Italian-American driver to win the race.

1970s

The 1970s saw the rise of the American drivers in the Indianapolis 500. In 1971, Al Unser won the race by a margin of just 0.04 seconds.

In 1972, Mark Donohue won the race by a margin of just 0.01 seconds. In 1973, Bobby Unser won the race by a margin of just 0.03 seconds.

1980s and 1990s

The 1980s and 1990s saw the rise of the Brazilian drivers in the Indianapolis 500. In 1989, Emerson Fittipaldi became the first Brazilian driver to win the race.

In 1993, Helio Castroneves became the youngest driver to ever win the race. In 1997, Tony Kanaan became the second Brazilian driver to win the race.

21st Century

The 21st century has seen the rise of the American drivers in the Indianapolis 500. In 2000, Buddy Rice won the race by a margin of just 0.01 seconds.

In 2006, Sam Hornish Jr. won the race by a margin of just 0.063 seconds. In 2014, Ryan Hunter-Reay won the race by a margin of just 0.06 seconds.
