The Roaring Twenties

In 1925, Pete DePaolo won the race by a mere 2.1 seconds. In 1927, George Souders won the race by a margin of just 1.9 seconds.
1936-1941
The 1930s saw the rise of the European drivers in the Indianapolis 500. In 1934, Wilbur Shaw became the first European driver to win the race.
Shaw won the race again in 1937 and 1939. In 1938, Floyd Roberts became the first American driver to win the race in over a decade.
Post-War
After World War II, the Indianapolis 500 resumed in 1946. The race was won by George Robson, who averaged a speed of 114.8 mph.
