In a bombshell revelation that has shaken the UK government to its core, a trove of leaked emails have laid bare a culture of illicit parties, special favors, and cover-ups in the heart of Downing Street.
The emails, obtained by The Telegraph, provide irrefutable evidence of the rule-breaking and cronyism that have characterized the premiership of Boris Johnson. They reveal a complete disregard for the laws and regulations that the rest of the country has been forced to endure during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Among the most damning revelations is the existence of a "bring your own booze" party held in the Downing Street garden on May 20, 2020, at a time when social gatherings were banned under lockdown rules. The email invite, sent by Johnson's then-principal private secretary Martin Reynolds, reads:
Hi all,
After what has been an incredibly busy period we thought it would be nice to make the most of the lovely weather and have some socially distanced drinks in the No 10 garden this evening.
Please come and join us from 6pm and bring your own booze!
The email was sent to over 100 Downing Street staff, including Johnson himself. Despite the clear violation of lockdown rules, the party went ahead as planned, with attendees drinking and socializing for several hours.
The leaked emails also reveal a pattern of special favors being granted to Johnson's friends and allies. In one email, Reynolds asks a government official to help arrange a job for a friend of Johnson's wife, Carrie Symonds. In another email, Johnson's chief of staff, Dominic Cummings, intervenes to help a friend of his secure a lucrative government contract.
The emails have sparked widespread outrage across the UK, with many calling for Johnson's resignation. The opposition Labour Party has accused Johnson of lying to Parliament about his knowledge of the parties and of creating a "culture of lawlessness" in Downing Street.
The Prime Minister has apologized for his actions, but has refused to resign. He has said that he believed the Downing Street garden party was a "work event" and that he was not aware of any rule-breaking at the time.
The Ubergate scandal is a major blow to Johnson's credibility and casts a dark shadow over his premiership. It remains to be seen whether he will be able to weather the storm and remain in office.
Read the leaked emails for yourself and decide whether Boris Johnson is fit to be Prime Minister.
