From the groundbreaking first issue of Star Wars in 1977 to the epic of The Empire Strikes Back in 1986, Goodwin's creative vision helped bring the galaxy to life on the printed page.

To commemorate the 40th anniversary of Goodwin's Star Wars tenure, we're taking a deep dive into his incredible legacy. From his early days as a writer on the original Star Wars film to his groundbreaking work on the Marvel and Dark Horse Comics series, we'll explore the impact of Archie Goodwin on the Star Wars universe.

The Early Years

Archie Goodwin was born in 1937 in New York City. He began his career in comics in the early 1960s, working for a variety of publishers including DC Comics and Warren Publishing. In 1976, he joined Marvel Comics as an editor, and it was there that he would make his mark on Star Wars.

Goodwin was a huge fan of the original Star Wars film, and he saw the potential for a successful comic book series based on the franchise. He convinced Marvel to acquire the rights, and in 1977, the first issue of Star Wars was published.

The comic book was an instant success, and it quickly became one of Marvel's best-selling titles. Goodwin's writing was praised for its humor, action, and character development. He also had a knack for creating memorable new characters, such as the bounty hunter Boba Fett and the smuggler Han Solo.

The Marvel Years

Goodwin continued to write and edit the Star Wars comic book series for Marvel for nearly a decade. During that time, he oversaw the publication of some of the most iconic Star Wars stories ever told.

In 1979, Goodwin wrote the adaptation of The Empire Strikes Back, which was one of the most successful comic book adaptations of a film ever published. He also wrote the "Shadows of the Empire" crossover event, which brought together characters from all three Star Wars films.

Goodwin's Star Wars comics were not only popular with fans, but they also received critical acclaim. In 1981, he won the Eisner Award for Best Writer for his work on the series.

The Dark Horse Years

In 1986, Goodwin left Marvel Comics to join Dark Horse Comics. He continued to write and edit Star Wars comics for Dark Horse for several years, and he produced some of his most innovative work during this time.

In 1991, Goodwin wrote the "Dark Empire" trilogy, which was one of the first major Star Wars stories to be set after the events of Return of the Jedi. The trilogy was a huge success, and it helped to re-energize the Star Wars franchise.

Goodwin also wrote a number of other popular Star Wars comics for Dark Horse, including the "Crimson Empire" trilogy and the "Legacy" series. He continued to work on Star Wars comics until his untimely death in 1998.

Archie Goodwin's Legacy

Archie Goodwin was a true visionary who played a major role in shaping the Star Wars universe. His Star Wars comics are still enjoyed by fans today, and they continue to inspire new generations of creators.

Goodwin's legacy is one of creativity, innovation, and passion. He was a master storyteller who brought the galaxy far, far away to life on the printed page. His work will continue to entertain and inspire fans for years to come.
