In 1974, at the age of 22, I embarked on a life-changing journey from London to Kathmandu. With a backpack, a tent, and a few dollars, I set off to hitchhike through Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, and Nepal. Little did I know that this adventure would shape the rest of my life.

Afghanistan: The Land of the Aryans

My first stop was Afghanistan, a country that was then on the cusp of a major political upheaval. I was immediately struck by the beauty of the landscape, with its snow-capped mountains, lush valleys, and ancient cities. The people of Afghanistan were warm and welcoming, and I quickly learned about their rich culture and history.

One of the highlights of my time in Afghanistan was a visit to the ancient city of Balkh. Founded by Alexander the Great in 329 BC, Balkh was once a major center of learning and culture. I spent hours exploring the ruins of the city, imagining what life must have been like here centuries ago.

Pakistan: The Land of the Pure

From Afghanistan, I crossed the bFree Download into Pakistan. Pakistan is a vast and diverse country, with a rich history and culture. I traveled through the bustling cities of Karachi and Lahore, and visited the ancient ruins of Mohenjo-daro.

One of the most memorable experiences of my time in Pakistan was a trek to the K2 base camp. K2 is the second highest mountain in the world, and the trek to its base camp is challenging but rewarding. I spent several days hiking through the beautiful scenery of the Karakoram Mountains, and finally reached the base camp at an altitude of 5,300 meters.

India: The Land of the Gods

From Pakistan, I traveled into India. India is a country of overwhelming beauty and diversity. I traveled through the bustling cities of Delhi and Mumbai, and visited the sacred city of Varanasi. I also spent time in the Himalayas, trekking to the base camp of Mount Everest.

One of the most amazing experiences of my time in India was a visit to the Taj Mahal. The Taj Mahal is a mausoleum built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. It is one of the most beautiful buildings in the world, and I was awestruck by its beauty.

Nepal: The Land of the Himalayas

My final destination was Nepal. Nepal is a small but beautiful country, nestled in the Himalayas. I trekked to the Annapurna Base Camp, and spent several days exploring the stunning scenery of the Annapurna Sanctuary.

One of the highlights of my time in Nepal was a visit to the Swayambhunath Stupa. The Swayambhunath Stupa is a Buddhist stupa located on a hilltop overlooking Kathmandu. It is one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in the world, and I spent several hours exploring the stupa and its surroundings.

My overland journey to Kathmandu was an experience that I will never forget. I traveled through some of the most beautiful and fascinating countries in the world, and I met some amazing people along the way. This journey taught me about the world and about myself, and it shaped the rest of my life.

If you are looking for an adventure, I highly recommend hitchhiking to Kathmandu. It is a challenging but rewarding experience, and it will stay with you for the rest of your life.
