Campus Action Against Sexual Assault: A Guide for Students
The consequences of sexual assault can be devastating. Victims may experience physical injuries, emotional trauma, and difficulty in school or work. They may also be more likely to develop mental health problems, such as depression and anxiety.
- Get educated about sexual assault. Learn about the different types of sexual assault, how to recognize the signs, and what to do if you or someone you know is victimized.
- Be an active bystander. If you see or hear something that makes you think someone is being assaulted, don't be afraid to intervene. You can do this by speaking up, getting help from others, or calling the police.
- Support survivors. If you know someone who has been sexually assaulted, offer your support. Listen to them, believe them, and help them get the resources they need.
- Get involved in campus organizations. There are many student organizations that work to prevent sexual assault on campus. Get involved in these organizations to learn more about the issue and to make a difference.
- Create a safe and supportive campus climate. This means creating an environment where students feel comfortable reporting sexual assault and where they are confident that they will be treated fairly.
- Provide prevention education. All students should receive education about sexual assault, including how to recognize the signs of assault and what to do if they or someone they know is victimized.
- Train staff and faculty. Staff and faculty should be trained on how to recognize the signs of sexual assault, how to respond to survivors, and how to prevent sexual assault from happening.
- Provide support services. Campuses should provide a range of support services for survivors of sexual assault, including counseling, medical care, and legal assistance.
- Enforce policies against sexual assault. Campuses should have clear policies against sexual assault and should enforce these policies fairly.
Sexual assault is a serious problem on college campuses, but it is not one that we have to accept. By working together, students, campuses, and communities can create a safe and supportive environment where sexual assault is not tolerated.
This guide provides students with the information and tools they need to take action against sexual assault on campus. By educating themselves, being active bystanders, supporting survivors, and getting involved in campus organizations, students can make a difference.
