The Air Transport Command was activated on June 1, 1942, just six months after the United States entered World War II. The ATC's mission was to provide airlift support for the Army and Navy. The ATC initially operated a fleet of civilian aircraft, but as the war progressed, the ATC began to acquire military aircraft. By the end of the war, the ATC was operating a fleet of over 2,000 aircraft.
The ATC played a vital role in the Allied victory in World War II. The ATC transported over 22 million troops and 3 million tons of cargo to the front lines. The ATC also evacuated over 1 million wounded soldiers from the battlefield.
The ATC was deactivated on September 30, 1945, but its legacy lives on in the modern-day Air Mobility Command. The AMC is responsible for providing airlift support for the United States military. The AMC operates a fleet of over 1,000 aircraft and transports over 2 million tons of cargo each year.
Air Transport Command: Birth of AMC is a comprehensive history of the ATC. The book is based on extensive research and includes interviews with many of the men and women who served in the ATC. Air Transport Command: Birth of AMC is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of airlift or World War II.
